This page explains how 4x4 & Overlanding produces its reviews, rankings and buying guides, who is accountable for them, and how to tell us when we get something wrong. It sits alongside our How We Rank and Affiliate Disclosure pages.
What We Do — And What We Don’t
We do not buy, install or physically test the gear we cover. We are a research desk, not a hands-on lab, and we say so plainly on every page. Our rankings are built by reading and weighing the evidence that already exists: verified owner reviews, the praise and complaints that repeat across many buyers, manufacturer specification sheets and rated capacities, wheeling-forum discussion, and expert consensus. When we describe how a product performs, we are reporting the aggregated experience of the people who actually own it — not a claim that we ran it ourselves.
How We Rank
Every recommendation is weighed on a consistent set of criteria — rated capacity, fitment accuracy, durability, ease of installation and value for money — so a verdict means the same thing on a budget traction board as it does on a premium winch. A product only earns a place on a list when the weight of real owner evidence supports it. Where an item has too little evidence to judge honestly, we say so rather than inventing confidence. We do not display Amazon star ratings, review counts or prices anywhere on the site; the full reasoning is on How We Rank.
Editorial Independence
Our recommendations are not for sale. We earn affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links, and that is how the site is funded — but a commission never buys a better ranking, a softer verdict or a spot on a list. If the owner reviews say a product is mediocre, we say so, even on items where we would earn. No manufacturer, brand or advertiser reviews or approves our content before it is published. Pricing & Availability
We do not display prices anywhere on this site — every product card is a neutral “Check Price” button that sends you to Amazon, where the live price and availability always apply. This also means a price change is never something to report as a correction here.
Sourcing & Accuracy
We aim for claims that can be traced to a source: manufacturer spec sheets and rated-capacity documentation for hardware details, aggregated owner reviews for real-world performance, and reputable expert coverage for context. We do not fabricate ratings, review counts, certifications or first-hand experiences. Product specifications and fitment details change over time; we re-check and update pages, but before making a purchase decision with real consequences, confirm the current details on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s own website.
Who Writes Our Content
Our reviews and guides are produced by a small editorial team, each responsible for a defined area of coverage. Every article carries a byline linking to that editor’s profile, which lists their focus areas and the topics they cover:

Corrections
We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If you spot a factual error — an out-of-date spec, a mis-stated feature, a broken or mis-attributed detail — please tell us through the contact page. We review every report, fix confirmed errors promptly, and where a correction materially changes a recommendation we note the update on the page. Substantive corrections are made transparently, not quietly rewritten to hide that a change occurred.
Updates
Off-road and overlanding product lines change quickly. We revisit rankings and guides as products launch, get discontinued, or accumulate enough new owner feedback to shift the evidence. A page’s “last updated” signal reflects meaningful review, not a cosmetic timestamp bump.
