TL;DR

  • Three Tundra generations: 2000–2006, 2007–2021 and the current truck, redesigned for 2022 with a twin-turbo V6 in place of the V8s and a coil-sprung rear axle in place of leaf springs.
  • Every 4x4 Tundra uses part-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case. A factory locking rear differential arrived with the 2022 truck, on the TRD Pro and the TRD Off-Road package; the 2021 V8 truck had brake-based A-TRAC and no locker.
  • The current engines make 389 hp and 479 lb-ft (i-FORCE) or 437 hp and 583 lb-ft (i-FORCE MAX hybrid); maximum towing is 12,000 lb.
  • Three NHTSA campaigns (24V381, 25V767, 26V320) cover 2022–2024 twin-turbo V6 engines whose main bearings can fail from machining debris; the remedy runs from an inspection to a new engine.
  • 2007–2008 Tundras were part of Toyota's 2017 frame-corrosion settlement (program ZH7); 2000–2003 trucks in salt states had a rear cross-member recall.

IIHS records the Tundra CrewMax as redesigned for the 2007 and 2022 model years, and NHTSA's recall records list Tundras from the 2000 model year. The current truck is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio on the TNGA-F platform with a fully boxed steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear with coil springs. Toyota's 3.4L figure is the V35A engine's 3,445 cc. The hybrid adds a 48-hp motor-generator, clutched in the bell housing between engine and transmission, and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery.

4WD System by Trim (2022–2026)

Toyota lists the 4x4 system as 4WDemand part-time 4WD with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case (high and low range) and an automatic limited-slip function. Part-time means 4H and 4L lock the front and rear driveshafts together, so 4WD is for loose or slippery surfaces, not dry pavement. The 2023 grades were SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro and Capstone; Toyota offered the TRD Pro and Capstone only with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

Clearance depends on trim. On a 2026 Limited or 1794 Edition 4x4 CrewMax, Toyota lists 9.4 inches of minimum ground clearance and 23.0° approach and 17.4° departure angles.

4WD on the 2007–2021 Tundra

Toyota's 2021 materials describe 4WDemand part-time 4WD with a six-pinion planetary reduction gearset giving 2WD, 4 High and 4 Low. On 4x4 trucks, A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) brakes a spinning wheel to send torque to the one with grip; no locking differential is listed for any 2021 grade, TRD Pro included. The 2021 TRD Pro used 2.5-inch FOX internal-bypass shocks, springs that added 2 inches of front lift and Michelin P275/65R18 all-terrain tires. The 2021 truck was rated to tow up to 10,200 lb with a payload of up to 1,730 lb.

CrewMax beds5.5 ft5.5 ft or 6.5 ft

Those maximums apply to one configuration each. A 2026 Limited 4x4 CrewMax with the 5.5-ft bed, for example, is rated at 11,120 lb of towing and 1,640 lb of payload; the 1794 Edition with the 6.5-ft bed is rated at 10,870 lb and 1,545 lb. Your truck's own figures are on the door-jamb placard and in the owner's manual.

What Fits Across Generations

The 2022 redesign replaced the frame, the rear suspension (leaf springs to coil multi-link) and the body, so 2nd-gen suspension lifts, bumpers and skid plates are a separate fitment group from 3rd-gen parts. Within the 3rd generation, bed length matters for tonneau covers and bed racks. On 2026 CrewMax trucks Toyota lists a 65.6-inch bed on the 145.7-inch wheelbase and a 77.6-inch bed on the 157.7-inch wheelbase, with 48.7 inches between the wheel wells. Trucks with the load-leveling rear air suspension also need lift and leveling kits made for that setup.

Frame and Corrosion Programs

NHTSA recall 09V444 covered about 110,000 2000–2003 Tundras sold or registered in 20 cold-climate states and Washington, D.C. A corroded rear cross-member could drop the spare tire and damage the rear brake lines and proportioning valve. Toyota told owners to remove the spare until the repair was done. Dealers inspected the parts and replaced them or treated them with anti-corrosion compound.

For 2007–2008 Tundras, Toyota's Warranty Enhancement Program ZH7 followed a class-action settlement approved May 21, 2017. Frames that met the court-ordered rust-perforation standard were replaced at no cost. The related corrosion-resistant compound campaign (LSC H0F) for cold-climate states expired May 20, 2019.

Recall History (NHTSA)
