TL;DR
- There are four main designs: soft roll-up, hard (or soft) folding, hard roll-up and retractable. Hard panels resist cutting; vinyl doesn't.
- Load ratings are published by some makers and not others. Gator lists 300 lb for its EFX folding cover and 500 lb for its GatorTrax MX retractable, both evenly distributed.
- Fuel economy isn't a reason to buy one: in Consumer Reports' Ram test a soft tonneau cover returned 21.4 mpg against 22.3 mpg with the tailgate up and the bed open.
- Fit by measured bed length, not the nominal name: Ford's "5.5-ft" F-150 box is 67.1 in at the floor.
- A cover and any bed hardware come out of payload; the B-pillar placard (49 CFR 571.110) gives the occupants-plus-cargo limit.

What a Tonneau Cover Is
Merriam-Webster defines a tonneau cover as a lid, of fabric or aluminum, that covers the bed of a pickup truck. The word first meant the rear seating compartment of an early automobile, and comes from the French for a cask. A tonneau cover sits at or just above the bed rails: Rough Country's soft roll-up rides 1-1/8 in above the bed. Soft covers also come in tri-fold form: Gator and Rough Country both sell soft folding covers alongside their roll-ups. Retractables come in manual and powered versions; Gator's GatorTrax MX Electric adds a motor, a key fob, an electromagnetic brake that holds the cover at any position, and an LED bed light. The load ratings above are each maker's own figure for weight spread evenly over the closed cover. They aren't a standing or point-load rating, and a model with no published figure should be treated as having no rating.
Security: What the Latches and Panels Do
Rigid panels and slats are the main security step up. Gator describes its GatorTrax MX aluminum cover as resisting impacts, abrasion and sharp blades, and its HR1 hard roll-up bonds the vinyl to interlocking aluminum slats for the same reason. A soft roll-up is vinyl that a blade can cut. The latching matters as much as the panel: Gator's EFX uses automatic dual slam latches with a single pull-cable release, so it locks when shut. Covers like the EFX and Rough Country's soft roll-up (its locking type is listed as "tailgate") release from inside the bed, so they are only as secure as a locked tailgate. Retractables such as the GatorTrax MX carry their own key-lockable latch that works independently of the tailgate. For costly tools, a lockable box inside the bed adds a second layer; DECKED rates its bed tool box at 300 lb on the lid and 800 lb in the tub.
Weather Sealing and Drainage
Gator states that no bed cover is 100 percent waterproof, and hard-cover makers design around that. The EFX uses flush perimeter seals with integrated drain rails; the Recoil and GatorTrax retractables use seals plus drain channels that feed drain tubes; Rough Country's hard covers include drain tubes with the rail system. Soft roll-ups close their sides with hook-and-loop seals. The practical consequence: drain tubes need a clear path out of the bed, and anything that can't get damp belongs in a sealed container. Rough Country also sells a separate tailgate seal kit for the gap below the cover.
Fitment: Measure the Bed, Not the Brochure
Bed-length names round off. Ford's 2026 F-150 specifications show how far:

That's why the same F-150 short box is sold as "5.5 ft" by some cover makers and "5 ft 7 in" by others. Rough Country's fitment notes say to measure from the bottom of the bulkhead to the tailgate opening, and they list exclusions beyond length: its Silverado and Sierra 1500 covers don't fit the CarbonPro composite bed or the Silverado and Sierra EV. Factory rail systems, bed-side storage boxes and ladder-rack feet change fit too, so check a listing's notes against every option on your truck.
Payload: A Worked Example
Ford's towing guide defines payload as GVWR minus the truck's base curb weight, with optional equipment and cargo counting against it. The number to work from is on the tire and loading placard required by 49 CFR 571.110, and 49 CFR 575.6 sets out the method owners' manuals use: take the placard's occupant-and-cargo limit, subtract passengers, and what's left is cargo capacity. Take a placard limit of 1,400 lb, two 180-lb occupants, and a full-size DECKED drawer system (DECKED lists about 208 lb for the short-bed unit): 1,400 − 360 − 208 = 832 lb left for the cover and everything else. Weigh your own cover's shipping weight or check its spec sheet, since this list's makers mostly don't publish cover weights.
Installation and Care
The covers from Gator and Rough Country cited here all install without drilling: Rough Country quotes 20 minutes for its soft roll-up and 30–45 minutes for its hard covers, clamping to the factory bed rails. Gator's EFX keeps the stake pockets open for tie-downs and removes without tools. Gator's Recoil and GatorTrax retractables slide on sealed ball-bearing rollers that Gator describes as maintenance-free, and Rough Country's manual retractable has a removable canister for full bed access. Organizers, Tents and Caps
A drawer system raises the bed floor, so check clearance before pairing it with a cover: DECKED's full-size system is 12.2 in tall and rated for 2,000 lb evenly distributed on top and 200 lb per drawer. Bed tents mount on the rails and need the cover out of the way. Napier says its truck tents fit over a roll-up cover only if the rolled cover stands less than 6 in high. How to Choose
Start with what goes in the bed. If it's luggage and groceries, a soft roll-up or soft tri-fold covers weather and privacy. If it's tools, pick a hard folding, hard roll-up or retractable cover with a published load rating and a latch you can lock. If you open the bed many times a day, a retractable that locks part-open saves effort. Then measure the bed, list every factory option that touches the rails, and run the payload math with the cover's real weight.
