How we rank · Full disclosure
TL;DR
- A truck cap (camper shell, topper) encloses the bed up to cab height or higher; a tonneau cover sits at rail height.
- LEER points fiberglass caps at paint-matched daily and recreational use, and aluminum caps at commercial work with side doors, toolboxes and ladder racks.
- Modular caps ship direct and bolt together: LEER's NexCap weighs about 220–240 lb and carries up to 660 lb static on its roof.
- Roof ratings differ parked and moving: Rough Country's modular cap is rated 750 lb static but 400 lb dynamic.
- A cap won't save fuel; LEER cites about 0.1 mpg in one F-150 test and tells buyers not to buy a cap for mileage.

At a Glance
| If you mostly… | Cap type LEER points to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drive the truck daily and want it to look factory | Fiberglass, paint-matched | Shaped to the truck's body lines and painted to match |
| Run a work or fleet truck | Aluminum commercial cap | Side-access doors, toolboxes, shelving and ladder-rack options |
| Need tall gear or sleeping room | Mid-rise or high-rise | More interior height than a cab-high cap |
| Want to fit it yourself and mount a rooftop tent | Modular aluminum cap | Ships direct, assembles with hand tools, carries a published roof rating |

How a Cap Differs From a Tonneau Cover
The difference is height, and everything follows from it. A soft roll-up tonneau cover can sit 1-1/8 in above the bed (Rough Country's figure for its version); LEER's cab-high caps follow the height of the cab, and its mid-rise and high-rise models go higher. That extra space lets a cap hold upright bikes, coolers and camping setups, but LEER notes a cap also raises the truck's overall height, which matters for garages, parking structures and drive-throughs, and blocks tall loads unless the cap comes off. Rough Country notes its cap blocks cab-mounted cargo and digital rear-view cameras.
Fiberglass vs Aluminum
LEER frames the choice by use. Its fiberglass caps are vehicle-specific, built for particular makes, model years and bed lengths, with paint-matched finishes and options such as sliding windows, headliners, lighting and roof racks. Its aluminum caps, like the LEER DCC, are commercial units that can be set up with side-access doors, toolboxes, shelving, dividers, power options and ladder racks, and LEER describes them as relatively lightweight. Warranties differ by model: LEER lists a 5-year limited structural warranty on the DCC and tells fiberglass buyers to confirm terms with a dealer.

Modular Caps: A Newer Option
Modular caps bolt together from panels rather than being molded in one piece, and they change how caps are bought. LEER's NexCap is built from aluminum alloy, steel and stainless components, ships directly to the buyer, and assembles with standard tools and no drilling. It has T-slot channels for accessories and comes in two heights:
| Cap | Height | Approximate weight | Roof rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| LEER NexCap Low Profile | 13.78 in | 220 lb | Up to 660 lb static |
| LEER NexCap Standard | 20.47 in | 240 lb | Up to 660 lb static |
| Rough Country modular cap | Not listed | Not listed | 750 lb static, 400 lb dynamic |
Rough Country's six-piece cap adds gullwing side and rear doors with gas struts, MOLLE panels on the side doors, a brake light, an interior LED strip and key-locking doors, and is sold to fit specific bed lengths, such as 5 ft 7 in on the 2021–2026 F-150.
Static vs Dynamic Load Ratings
A static rating is what the cap's roof holds while the truck is parked; a dynamic rating is what it holds while driving, when bumps and braking multiply the forces. Rough Country's 750 lb static and 400 lb dynamic figures show how far apart they can be. For a rooftop tent, the tent, its occupants and bedding must fit under the static figure, and the tent and any rack must fit under the dynamic figure. The lower of the cap's rating and the rack's rating governs.
Payload: What a Cap Costs You in Capacity
A cap is cargo as far as payload is concerned. LEER says cap weight varies considerably by material, model and options and that payload should always be considered; the NexCap's 220–240 lb is one real reference point. The limit to work from is the occupant-and-cargo figure on the truck's tire and loading placard, required by 49 CFR 571.110. Using the method in 49 CFR 575.6, a 1,400-lb placard limit minus two 180-lb occupants and a 240-lb cap leaves 800 lb for everything else in the bed and on the roof.
Fuel Economy
LEER tells buyers not to buy a cap for fuel savings. It cites one F-150 test with a LEER cap that showed about 0.1 mpg of difference, and says the effect depends on truck, cap shape, speed, payload and conditions. Consumer Reports' 2013 test found the same pattern for bed covers: on its Ram at 65 mph a factory soft tonneau cover returned 21.4 mpg, against 22.3 mpg with the bed open and the tailgate up.
Sleeping Under a Cap
A cap makes a dry bed platform, but it is an enclosed space. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says never to use fuel-burning portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and vehicles, and notes the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning rises at high altitude. Use battery lighting and insulated bedding instead. Bed tents are a different product: Napier says its truck tents won't work while a cap is mounted.
