A tonneau cover is a lid for a pickup bed, made of fabric or aluminum, that sits at or just above the bed rails. Merriam-Webster's definition says exactly that, and notes the word first meant the rear seating compartment of an early automobile. A cover does three jobs: it keeps weather off cargo, hides cargo from view and, in hard versions, adds a lockable barrier. It comes in four main designs that differ in how they open and what the top is made of.

Soft Roll-Up Covers
A soft roll-up stretches vinyl over a frame clamped to the bed rails. Rough Country's version uses marine-grade vinyl on a powder-coated aluminum frame, closes its sides with hook-and-loop seals, latches with a spring latch released by one cable pull, and rides 1-1/8 in above the bed. It gives full bed access when rolled up. The trade-off is that vinyl can be cut, and roll-ups generally carry no published load rating.
Folding Covers
A folding cover is a set of hinged panels; a tri-fold has three. Hard versions use aluminum: Gator's EFX is multi-layer aluminum rated for up to 300 lb evenly distributed, latches automatically when shut and folds to expose two-thirds of the bed, with straps that hold it there for driving. Rough Country's hard tri-fold flip-up adds prop rods that hold the whole cover upright for full access. Soft tri-folds, such as Gator's SFX, use vinyl panels instead.
Hard Roll-Up Covers
A hard roll-up behaves like a soft roll-up but bonds its vinyl top to interlocking aluminum slats. Gator describes its HR1 as cut- and theft-resistant for that reason, with two sets of slam latches at the rear and middle. Rough Country rates its hard roll-up for up to 600 lb evenly distributed.
Retractable Covers
A retractable cover's aluminum slats slide on rails into a canister mounted at the front of the bed. The advantage is partial access: Gator's Recoil can lock part-open at any point along the bed, and the GatorTrax MX Electric opens with a key fob and holds position with an electromagnetic brake. The canister sits in the bed permanently unless the design lets it come out; Rough Country's manual retractable has a removable canister for full bed access.
What a Cover Won't Do
It won't keep a bed perfectly dry: Gator states that no bed cover is 100 percent waterproof, which is why hard covers pair seals with drain channels and tubes. It also won't save fuel. In Consumer Reports' instrumented highway test of a 2013 Ram V8 at 65 mph, a factory soft tonneau cover returned 21.4 mpg, against 22.3 mpg with the tailgate up and the bed open. And its weight counts against payload like any cargo, per the occupant-and-cargo limit on the truck's tire and loading placard (49 CFR 571.110).
Fitment Is About Measured Bed Length
Covers are sized to the inside length of the bed, and nominal names round off. Ford's 2026 F-150 specifications list the "5.5-ft" box at 67.1 in at the floor, the "6.5-ft" box at 78.9 in and the "8-ft" box at 97.6 in. Rough Country's fitment notes say to measure from the bottom of the bulkhead to the tailgate opening, and they exclude beds that differ from the norm, such as GM's CarbonPro composite bed and the Silverado and Sierra EV.
