A soft roll-up cover is a vinyl top on an aluminum frame that clamps to the bed rails and rolls toward the cab for full bed access. It's the simplest tonneau design, and the one where fit matters most: the frame and vinyl are cut for one bed length, so a cover for the wrong length won't tension or seal.

Bed Length: Nominal Name vs Measured
Every cover above is tied to one bed length, and bed names round off. Ford's 2026 F-150 specifications list inside lengths at the floor of 67.1 in for the "5.5-ft" box, 78.9 in for the "6.5-ft" box and 97.6 in for the "8-ft" box, so the same short bed is sold as 5.5 ft by one cover maker and 5 ft 7 in by another. The listings above show the same rounding on other trucks: the Silverado and Sierra 1500's 5'10" (70-in) and 6'7" (79-in) beds, the Ram 1500's 5'7" (67-in) bed and the 2024+ Tacoma's 5-ft (60-in) bed. Rough Country says to measure from the bottom of the bulkhead to the tailgate opening and confirm the size before ordering.
Vinyl and Frame
The top and frame are what separate roll-ups at similar sizes. Rough Country specifies marine-grade, leather-grain vinyl with a matte finish over a black powder-coated aluminum frame, with heavy-duty hook-and-loop side seals and a spring latch released by one cable pull. Other listings above specify only "vinyl". Look for the vinyl grade, how the sides seal, and whether the frame is aluminum and coated, since those are the specifics a listing can be held to.
Rails, Clamps and Profile
The frame clamps to the bed rails and holds the vinyl taut; the latch sets the tension when closed. Several covers here are listed as on-top designs, sitting above the rail rather than inside it: Rough Country's rides 1-1/8 in above the bed. Mounting hardware differs between a bare bed rail and one with a factory rail or storage-box system, which is why the Tacoma cover above requires the deck rail system and the Ram cover excludes RamBox beds.

If security matters more than cost, a hard roll-up keeps the roll-up's full bed access while adding a rigid top. The hard folding and retractable roundups cover the other hard designs.
Fuel Economy
Don't count on a roll-up to save fuel. Consumer Reports ran a 2013 Ram V8 at 65 mph with an inline fuel meter: tailgate up with the bed open returned 22.3 mpg, and a factory soft tonneau cover returned 21.4 mpg.
Installation
All the covers above are listed as no-drill, clamping to the bed rails. Rough Country quotes about 20 minutes for its soft roll-up with the included brackets and tools. The cover's weight counts against the truck's payload like any cargo; the working limit is the occupant-and-cargo figure on the tire and loading placard (49 CFR 571.110).
