These guides help you decide whether you need a 4x4 at all, and which one fits how you drive. Start With the Drivetrain, Not the Badge

The difference that matters most off pavement is whether the vehicle has a two-speed transfer case. Ford's own lineup shows it plainly. The 2025 Bronco Sport is a unibody SUV whose 4x4 system uses a power transfer unit and a rear drive unit with clutches; it has no low range, and Ford lists its crawl ratio as 18:1. The 2026 Bronco is body-on-frame with a two-speed transfer case, and Ford lists crawl ratios from 57.19:1 (automatic, standard case) to 94.75:1 (manual, Advanced 4x4 case). What Low Range Actually Does: Crawl Ratio

A crawl ratio is first gear × low-range ratio × axle ratio: how many times the engine turns for each turn of the wheels in the lowest gear. The Bronco's 57.19:1 with its 2.72:1 low range means that the same first gear and axle give about 21:1 in high range. Shifting into low multiplies torque at the wheels by 2.72 and cuts wheel speed at any given engine rpm by the same factor. That lets a driver creep down a steep, loose descent or climb a ledge at walking pace without slipping the clutch or riding the brakes. AWD systems have only one range, so they can't do this.

What 4WD and AWD Don't Do

Neither system helps a vehicle stop. Consumer Reports' snow testing found all-wheel drive helps acceleration but not braking or some cornering, and it recommends four winter tires for any vehicle in snowy regions. CR also notes that driving a part-time system locked in 4WD on clear roads can damage the driveline, and that the turning circle widens in 4WD.

How to Check a Spec Sheet

Look for three things. Under the transfer case, a "2-speed" type and a low gear ratio (2.72:1 and 3.06:1 on the Bronco) confirm low range. Under chassis, "body-on-frame" or a boxed frame (Bronco, Land Cruiser) versus "unibody" (Bronco Sport) tells you the construction. And the EPA's fueleconomy.gov listing shows whether a model is sold as front-drive, rear-drive, AWD or 4WD, though a "4-Wheel Drive" label there does not by itself mean low range. Toyota's 2026 Land Cruiser shows what a full specification looks like: full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, locking center and rear differentials, and a high-strength boxed frame.
