TL;DR

  • Three Sequoia generations: 2001–2007, 2008–2022 and the current SUV, redesigned for 2023 on the same TNGA-F platform as the Tundra.
  • The two recent generations use different 4WD. The 2008–2022 Sequoia has a lockable Torsen center differential and can stay in 4WD on pavement; the 2023-on Sequoia is part-time 4WD only.
  • Every 2023-on Sequoia uses the i-FORCE MAX hybrid twin-turbo V6 (437 hp, 583 lb-ft) and a 10-speed automatic; Toyota rates it to tow up to 9,520 lb.
  • A factory locking rear differential comes only on the 2023-on TRD Pro and on trucks with the TRD Off-Road package. For 2027, Toyota adds an SR5-based Trailhunter package with a locker and Old Man Emu suspension.
  • NHTSA 24V125 is real: 2023–2024 Sequoias can roll in neutral with the brakes released, and the fix is a transmission-ECU software update.

MotorWeek's 2008 road test describes the all-new second generation using the Tundra's 5.7L V8 and six-speed automatic, rated to tow up to 10,000 lb. IIHS records the Sequoia as redesigned for 2023. The third generation is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, on the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tundra and Land Cruiser. The 1794 Edition grade was added for 2025. The 2026 grades are SR5, Limited, 1794 Edition, Platinum, TRD Pro and Capstone.

4WD System by Trim (2023–2026)

Toyota's 2026 specifications list 4WDemand part-time 4WD with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case (high and low range) and an automatic limited-slip function, selected with a switch on the center console. Part-time means the front and rear driveshafts turn together in 4H and 4L, so use it on dirt, snow, sand and mud, not dry pavement. SR5 and Limited come as rear-drive or 4WD; 4WD is standard on Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro and Capstone.

On a 2026 SR5 or Limited, Toyota lists 8.6 inches of minimum ground clearance and 15° approach and 20° departure angles.

4WD on the 2008–2022 Sequoia

Toyota's 2021 materials call the system Multi-Mode 4WD: a lockable Torsen limited-slip center differential splits torque front to rear, and a two-speed transfer case gives low range. A button locks the center differential and a rotary knob selects low range. On 4x4 models, A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) brakes a spinning wheel to send torque to the wheel with grip; Toyota lists no locking axle differential. Because the center differential lets the axles turn at different speeds, this Sequoia can stay in 4WD on dry roads with the center unlocked, a practical difference from the newer part-time truck. The TRD Pro arrived for 2020 with FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks; Toyota rated the 2021 TRD Pro to tow up to 7,100 lb.

The third row slides through 6 inches, which is why cargo space behind it is a range. Toyota's headline 9,520-lb towing figure applies to the best-equipped configuration; a heavy trailer plus a full load of passengers can reach the payload limit before the tow rating, so check your own door-jamb placard.

What Fits Across Generations

The 2023 redesign changed the frame, the body and the rear suspension (independent to a coil-sprung multi-link axle), so 2008–2022 suspension kits, bumpers and skid plates don't carry over. The 2023-on Sequoia shares the TNGA-F platform with the 2022-on Tundra, but its body, bumpers and roof are its own, so pickup parts for those areas don't fit. Check a part's listing for your exact model year and, on Limited, Platinum and Capstone trucks, for rear air-suspension compatibility.

Frame Corrosion Settlement (2005–2008)

Toyota's 2017 frame-corrosion class-action settlement included certain 2005–2008 Sequoias, alongside 2005–2010 Tacomas and 2007–2008 Tundras. Frames that met a court-ordered rust-perforation standard were eligible for replacement at no cost. The corrosion-resistant compound campaign (LSC H0F) for trucks registered in 20 cold-climate states and Washington, D.C. expired May 20, 2019. On a used Sequoia from those years, inspect the frame yourself.

Recall History (NHTSA)

As of September 2026, NHTSA's recall data lists 24 campaigns filed by Toyota that include a Sequoia or Sequoia Hybrid; most are shared with the Tundra or other Toyotas. NHTSA files the 2023-on SUV under "Sequoia Hybrid", so search that name when you check a recent model year. The campaigns most relevant to owners:
