TL;DR
- Toyo sells every tire here as an Open Country, from the A/T III all-terrain through two rugged-terrain R/T models to the M/T mud-terrain.
- The A/T III is the only one with the 3PMSF symbol, and the only one with more than 45,000 warranted miles: 65,000 on passenger sizes and 50,000 on LT and flotation sizes.
- The M/T has no mileage warranty, and 23 of its 84 listings are P speed-rated (93 mph).
- Same size, same load range, different load: in LT285/70R17 Load Range E, the R/T Trail is rated 3,748 lb per tire and the A/T III 3,197 lb.
- Toyo's technical bulletin shows why swapping a factory P-metric tire for an LT tire needs a pressure change: an LT245/75R16 needs 50 psi to carry what a P245/75R16 carries at 35 psi.
Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. was founded in 1966 and is headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. It is the US sales arm of Japan's Toyo Tire Corporation, which also owns the Nitto brand. The group's North American subsidiary makes Toyo and Nitto passenger and light-truck tires at a plant in White, Bartow County, Georgia. Toyo's spec tables give load index, load range and tread depth to a tenth of a 32nd for every Open Country size, and the figures below come from them.

Open Country A/T III
Toyo developed the A/T III with its T-mode modeling technology. It lists:
- a compound aimed at wet braking, cut-and-chip resistance and a quiet ride;
- evenly distributed void area;
- staggered shoulder lugs, stone-ejecting blocks and more lateral grooves;
- 3D multi-wave sipes, which Toyo says add wet and snow traction and reduce irregular wear.
It comes in three tread and shoulder designs depending on construction and size, and Toyo calls it Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake qualified. A separate Open Country A/T III EV has its own page.
It is the widest-ranging tire in the family: 148 size and load listings covering 139 sizes on 15-22in wheels. There are 61 passenger listings, with 12.7-13.9/32in of tread, graded 600 A B (600 A A on the ten H-rated sizes). The other 87 are 63 LT-metric, 23 flotation and one C-type, with 15.6-17.0/32in and no UTQG grade. Load Range E accounts for 58 listings, and 11 reach Load Range F. The warranty follows construction: 65,000 miles on P-metric and Euro-metric sizes, and 50,000 on the LT and flotation sizes most lifted trucks run.
Open Country R/T and R/T Trail
Toyo positions the R/T between the M/T's off-road ability and the A/T III's quieter ride. Its current chart is trimmed to 16 listings on 16-22in wheels: eight LT-metric sizes with 16.4/32in of tread and seven flotation sizes with 18.9/32in, all Q-rated, plus one passenger size, 265/65R18 (13.5/32in, 500 A B). The LT and flotation sizes use 3-ply polyester construction. The warranty is 45,000 miles.
The R/T Trail is the bigger range: 72 listings on 16-24in wheels, with 19 passenger, 28 LT-metric and 25 flotation listings and 13.3-16.9/32in of tread. Toyo says it grips better than a traditional all-terrain "most evident in the sand, mud, and deep snow." It lists extra-thick shoulder and sidewall lugs, a three-variable pitch pattern, staggered scalloped shoulder blocks, stone ejectors and rim protectors. Like the R/T it carries 45,000 miles and no 3PMSF symbol.
Open Country M/T
The M/T has a high turn-up polyester casing for impact resistance, hook-shaped tread blocks, deep siping, and open, scalloped shoulder blocks that eject mud and snow. It comes only in LT-metric (40) and flotation (44) listings, on 15-26in wheels, with 18.3-21/32in of tread; 39 flotation listings have 21/32in. Load Ranges run C to F, with 46 E and 15 F. Toyo gives it a limited warranty only, with no mileage figure. Most listings are Q-rated (99 mph), but 23, mostly common LT-metric sizes such as LT265/70R17 and LT285/70R17 E, are P. Toyo's owner's manual defines P as up to 93 mph.
Comparing Load Across the Open Country Range
The load index converts to a maximum load per tire; Goodyear's chart gives the pounds below.

The R/T Trail's Load Range E version is rated 551 lb per tire above the other three E versions. The C versions of the A/T III and R/T Trail are rated 441 lb below the E versions of the same tires. The speed letters differ too: the A/T III E is S (112 mph), and the M/T E is P (93 mph).
P-Metric to LT: Toyo's Guidance
Toyo's technical bulletin TSD-12-011, "Replacing Tires on Light Trucks," sets the rule: a replacement on any light truck must have equal or higher load capacity than the original tire. It works through an example. A P245/75R16 109 is rated 2,271 lb at 35 psi. A light truck that leaves the factory on it must divide that by 1.10 under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120, so the tire is actually carrying about 2,065 lb. An LT245/75R16 Load Range C needs 50 psi to carry the P-metric tire's load, and so do the D and E versions. An LT tire run at the P-metric's 35 psi is underinflated for the load and runs hotter.
The bulletin says LT tires are not "heavy duty" when underinflated. It warns that the higher pressures LT tires need can make the ride harsher. Toyo also doesn't recommend P-metric tires as replacements for LT-metric duals.
Toyo Warranty and Trial
Toyo's replacement-tire limited warranty covers the original purchaser, on the original vehicle, with the correct size, load and speed rating. It is written for tires bought after March 2015.
- Uniformity: a tire that is out of round, out of balance or pulling is replaced free, including mounting and balancing, within the first 1/32in of wear.
- Other covered conditions: replacement is free up to 25% tread wear and within 60 months of purchase. After 25% it is prorated by the share of usable tread worn, times the current dealer price.
- Mileage warranty: the owner pays miles driven divided by warranted miles, times the dealer price. An A/T III LT tire that wears out at 40,000 of its 50,000 miles is billed at 80%. Rear tires on staggered fitments get half the warranted miles.
Mileage claims need service records showing rotation. Toyo recommends rotating standard passenger and light-truck tires at least every 7,500 miles. The tire must have been installed within 60 months of purchase and never used commercially.
Exclusions include:
- road hazards;
- racing and other competition;
- damage from improperly sized studs;
- passenger tires used on pickups carrying slide-in campers;
- weather cracking claimed more than five years after manufacture.
The A/T III, R/T Trail and M/T pages also advertise a 500-mile or 45-day trial: a buyer who isn't satisfied within that window can return the tires. Toyo recommends replacing any tire in service 10 years or more after its manufacture date.
