What 3PMSF, UTQG and Load Range Actually Mean

3PMSF (the mountain-and-snowflake icon on the sidewall) marks a tire that has passed an industry snow-traction test defined by U.S. tire manufacturers for severe-snow service; it is a pass/fail severe-snow qualification, not a graded score, and it says nothing about ice, wet or dry performance. UTQG — treadwear, traction and temperature grades — is a federal labeling program NHTSA runs for passenger tires; NHTSA's own tire-safety page notes the ratings appear on "every passenger vehicle tire," which is why the A/T III's LT and flotation sizes carry no UTQG grade at all: the program doesn't grade light-truck-metric tires.
