A retractable cover is a sheet of aluminum slats that slides along rails on the bed sides and coils into a canister at the front of the bed. Its advantage over roll-up and folding covers is partial access: it can be locked open at a point of your choosing.

How the Canister Mechanism Works
The slats run in side rails mounted to the bed rails. Gator's Recoil describes the full system: aluminum side rails, aluminum slats and an aluminum canister, with the cover rolling on sealed ball-bearing rollers. To open it, you drop the tailgate, release the rear latches and push the cover into the canister. On the Recoil the adjustable locking positions let you stop and lock it anywhere along the bed, and Rough Country's manual retractable uses an integrated tension spring to help the cover open and close. The GatorTrax MX works independently of the tailgate, with its own key-lockable latch.

These are the makers' own figures. "Evenly distributed" means spread across the closed cover, not a point load, and none of the picks above lists a rating in its product details, so plan as if they have none.
Manual vs Powered
A manual cover moves by hand with a pull strap or handle; spring assist, as on Rough Country's, reduces the effort. A powered cover adds a motor and a wireless fob. Gator's electric model holds its position with an electromagnetic brake when you release the button, and adds a bed light. Check how a powered cover's motor is fed and wired before buying; that is part of the install a manual cover doesn't have.
Locks: Key Cylinder or Keypad
Most retractables use a key cylinder at the tailgate end; the GatorTrax MX's key-lockable latch is an example. One product above uses a password keypad instead, per its listing, which helps if several people need bed access without sharing a key. Either way, the lock only holds the latch; the aluminum slats are what resist being cut. Gator describes its GatorTrax MX cover as withstanding impacts, abrasion and sharp blades.
Seals and Drainage
Gator says no bed cover is 100 percent waterproof. Its retractables use perimeter seals, and water that slips past them collects in drain channels and exits through drain tubes; Rough Country's covers also use drain tubes on the rail system. Those tubes have to stay clear and unkinked, especially if you add a drawer system or bed mat.
EV and Other Special Beds
Model names don't guarantee identical beds. Rough Country's fitment notes for its GM covers state they don't fit the Silverado or Sierra EV "due to variances in bed design and functionality", nor the CarbonPro composite bed; the ONINE cover above is built for the EV bed specifically. Ford's F-150 specifications show why length names mislead too: the "5.5-ft" box is 67.1 in at the floor. Measure from the bulkhead to the tailgate opening, as Rough Country instructs, and read every listing's exclusions.
