The New Nissan Xterra: Confirmed Facts vs Reports

What Nissan Has Officially Confirmed

These points come directly from Nissan’s own channels:

• It’s returning. In its April 14, 2026 long-term strategy release, issued in Nashville, Tennessee, Nissan described the Xterra as a “Heartbeat” model for the U.S. and Canada, offering body-on-frame strength and purpose-driven design. Nissan uses “Heartbeat” for the models it says embody its identity and emotional value.
• It leads a new family of trucks. Nissan’s global release on the same strategy describes a new family of all-new body-on-frame vehicles led by the return of Xterra.
• V6 and V6 hybrid. Both Nissan releases say that family will offer V6 and new V6-hybrid powertrains.
• Late-2028 target, U.S.-produced. Nissan USA’s discontinued-models page for the Xterra now says an all-new Xterra is targeted to launch late 2028 and describes it as U.S. produced.

What Has Been Reported, but Not in Nissan’s Releases

The following details come from automotive press coverage of the announcement and interviews with Nissan executives. They are attributed to the outlet that reported them. Treat them as reported, not as confirmed specifications.

• Four sibling models. Cars.com reported on April 13, 2026 that Nissan said four other body-on-frame models will join the Xterra in the U.S. lineup. No details of those four were given.
• A deliberately simpler, more affordable vehicle. CarBuzz reported on May 3, 2026 that Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier said Nissan had added too much technology and cost to its vehicles and that the Xterra would symbolize a change of direction. The same report quoted Meunier on keeping exciting products affordable. CarBuzz also reported an affordability-focused starting-price target. Nissan hasn’t published official pricing.
• Built for the aftermarket. The same CarBuzz report quoted Nissan Americas chief product officer Ponz Pandikuthira as saying the Xterra would be made easy for the aftermarket to adapt with lift kits, bigger wheels and tires, and fender flares.
• The teaser image. The Drive reported on April 13, 2026 that Nissan shared a first front-end teaser, which the outlet described as showing a segmented light bar, a three-section grille and NISSAN lettering across the nose.

You’ll also find reports online naming a specific assembly plant, tire sizes, investment figures and exact timing. We couldn’t confirm those in Nissan’s own releases, so we haven’t repeated them. When Nissan publishes a press kit with specifications, this page will be updated to reflect it.

What Is Still Unknown

As of this update, Nissan hasn’t officially published any of the following:

• Engine displacement, horsepower, torque or hybrid system details
• Towing capacity, payload or fuel economy
• Trim names, including whether a PRO-4X version will be offered
• Four-wheel-drive system, low-range gearing or locking differentials
• Official pricing or an on-sale date
• A model-year designation for the first trucks

Any article that states these as facts is speculating. Nissan also hasn't said whether the Xterra will share hardware with its current body-on-frame pickup, the Frontier, compared below.

What the Original Xterra Was

Nissan’s website says the Xterra was produced from 2000 to 2015. Its final 2015 press kit gives a useful benchmark for what the name meant:

• A 4.0-liter DOHC V6 with 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque
• A 6-speed manual (S 4x4 and PRO-4X 4x4 only) or a 5-speed automatic
• A part-time 4WD system with 2WD, 4HI and 4LO modes and an electronically controlled transfer case
• On PRO-4X, an electronic locking rear differential, Bilstein high-performance gas shocks, skid plates, Hill Descent Control and roof-mounted off-road lights
• A fully boxed, all-steel ladder frame shared with the Titan pickup and Armada SUV
• A 106.3-inch wheelbase, with ground clearance of 8.2 inches on X and S models and 9.5 inches on PRO-4X
• 265/70R16 tires on X and S, 265/75R16 all-terrains on PRO-4X
• Assembly in Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee, in X, S and PRO-4X grades (PRO-4X 4WD only)

The Xterra's short wheelbase was part of its trail appeal: about 20 inches shorter than even the shortest current Frontier. Whether the new Xterra keeps anything like that length is one of the specifications Nissan hasn't published.

When Nissan announced the end of the line in 2015, Cars.com reported that more than 750,000 Xterras had been sold, and that Nissan expected the last one to be sold that fall.

If You Want an Xterra-Style Nissan Today

Until the new Xterra arrives, the Frontier PRO-4X is the Nissan whose hardware most closely follows the old Xterra PRO-4X, as the table above shows. Our Frontier PRO-4X review covers what it offers.
