What Falken Changed From the A/T3W

Falken says the A/T4W keeps the A/T3W's features and adds an updated tread, a more durable sidewall, staggered shoulder blocks and an all-new compound. It lists three construction features:

• 3-ply DURASPEC sidewall technology, on select sizes only.
• Updated Heat Diffuser technology, which Falken says draws heat out of the tire for stability when towing at full load.
• Heavy Duty (HD) sizes, which Falken says improve towing at higher load capacities and higher tire pressures than the A/T3W.

These are Falken's descriptions. The size data below shows what the HD sizes actually add.

Size and Load Range Breakdown

The 105 variants break down like this:

By wheel size there are 9 sizes on 15-inch wheels, 16 on 16-inch, 27 on 17-inch, 22 on 18-inch, 24 on 20-inch and 7 on 22-inch. Speed ratings are T (118 mph) on 39 variants, S (112 mph) on 35, R (106 mph) on 30 and H (130 mph) on one. New tread depth runs from 13/32in on the smaller passenger sizes to 19/32in on the flotation and largest LT sizes.

Passenger Versus LT: The 265/70R17 Example

The same nominal size comes in very different forms. The 265/70R17 passenger tire is 115T, with 14/32in of tread and a 660 A B UTQG grade. The LT265/70R17 is a Load Range E at 123/120S with 17/32in of tread and no UTQG grade. Goodyear's load-index chart converts 115 to 2,679 lb and 123 to 3,417 lb per tire.

FMVSS 110 sets the rule for trucks and SUVs. The tires on each axle must add up to at least the gross axle weight rating (GAWR) on the certification label, and a passenger tire's rating is divided by 1.10 first. Two 265/70R17 passenger tires count as about 4,871 lb per axle. Two LT265/70R17 E tires give 6,834 lb.

The passenger tire is the only one with a UTQG grade, because 49 CFR 575.104 covers passenger-car tires only. Its traction grade A means a wet-braking coefficient above 0.47 on asphalt and above 0.35 on concrete. Most graded A/T4W sizes are 660 A B; four are 660 B B and two are 660 A A.

Load range also changes within LT sizes. The LT285/70R17 comes as a Load Range C at 116/113R (2,756 lb) and as an E at 126/123S (3,748 lb), a 992 lb difference in the same size.

The Heavy Duty Load Range F Sizes

Load figures convert each load index using Goodyear's chart. LT load ratings apply at a stated inflation pressure; Nitto, for example, lists its own Load Range F loads at 80 psi. For everyday driving, NHTSA says to inflate to the vehicle placard, not the maximum molded on the sidewall. Note that 33x12.50R20LT, an F, carries less than the E-rated LT285/70R17 because of its load index.

Warranty and Coverage

The limited tread-life warranty is 65,000 miles on non-LT sizes and 60,000 miles on LT sizes. That is 10,000 miles more than the A/T3W on passenger sizes and 5,000 more on LT sizes. Falken also backs the tire with its Road Hazard protection and a 30-Day Ride Guarantee.

How It Compares Within Falken's Lineup

The A/T4W replaces the Wildpeak A/T3W. Falken's other truck all-terrain, the Rubitrek A/T, has 43 sizes, 3PMSF and a 55,000-mile warranty. In LT265/70R17 it is 121/118S (3,197 lb) with 18/32in of tread, against the A/T4W's 123/120S (3,417 lb) with 17/32in. The Wildpeak R/T is Falken's hybrid, with no severe-snow claim and a 50,000-mile warranty. The Wildpeak M/T is the mud-terrain, with no mileage warranty.
