What "Crossover-Specific" Means in the Construction

Falken describes a durable two-ply polyester casing with rugged upper sidewall features, and a tread design meant to keep a crossover's efficiency. It says it created the A/T Trail as an all-terrain drivers could substitute directly for their original equipment tires. Falken's size list shows what that means in practice:

• Weight: tires run from 25.6 lb (205/60R16) to 41.4 lb (265/50R20).
• Load: maximum loads run from 1,389 lb (205/60R16, load index 92) to 2,403 lb (load index 111), at a maximum cold pressure of 51 psi for Standard Load sizes and 50 psi for Extra Load sizes.
• Tread: 10/32" to 11/32" of depth, against up to 19/32" on Falken's truck-oriented Wildpeak A/T4W.

For scale, BFGoodrich rates its light-truck KO3 in LT265/70R17 Load Range E at 3,415 lb per tire at 80 psi. The A/T Trail isn't built for that kind of load, and Falken points pickup owners to the A/T4W instead.

Sizes and Speed Ratings

Falken's size list has 46 sizes: 27 Standard Load and 19 Extra Load. Most are 17- to 20-inch sizes in 45- to 65-series profiles, with two 15-inch sizes, four 16-inch sizes and one 21-inch size, 265/45R21. 24 sizes are V-rated (149 mph on Goodyear's speed chart) and 20 are H-rated (130 mph). Only 215/75R15 and 235/75R15 carry a T rating (118 mph).

On this tire the Standard Load and Extra Load split matters: 215/65R16, 235/65R17 and 235/60R18, for example, are Extra Load, so check whether your placard calls for XL.

What the 680-A-A Grade Means

The UTQG grade is 680-A-A on 43 of 46 sizes. Under 49 CFR 575.104, the treadwear number compares wear on a roughly 400-mile government test course: a tire graded 150 wears one and a half times as well there as one graded 100. So 680 is a relative figure, not a mileage estimate. Traction A means an adjusted wet braking coefficient above 0.47 on asphalt and 0.35 on concrete. Temperature A means the tire completed the 575 rpm stage of the laboratory heat test, the highest grade.

The exceptions are 215/75R15 (640-B-B), 235/75R15 (640-A-B), 255/50R19 (640-A-A). The two 15-inch sizes, 215/75R15 and 235/75R15, are also the only T-rated sizes and two of the four sizes with 10/32" of tread. If your crossover runs one of them, the tire's headline specs don't apply, so check your row in the chart.

The Snow Rating

Falken says the A/T Trail earned the USTMA's Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol and lists no size exclusions. The USTMA test behind the symbol compares packed-snow grip with a reference tire, which the A/T Trail had to beat by at least 10%. It rates snow traction only, not ice, and a dedicated winter tire is still a separate category.

Against Its Siblings and Rivals

Falken's own Wildpeak A/T4W is the truck-oriented option. It covers passenger and LT sizes in load ranges SL, XL, C, D, E, F, with 13–19/32" (varies by size) of tread and a 65,000 mi (non-LT); 60,000 mi (LT) warranty.

Two other SL/XL, 3PMSF-rated all-terrains make good comparisons. Nitto rates the Nomad Grappler at 12.3–13.5/32" (varies by size) of tread with a 60,000 mi warranty. The Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT has 11–13/32" (varies by size) and the same 65,000 mi warranty. Both have a little more tread depth. The A/T Trail covers more sizes for newer crossovers: it lists eight 19-inch sizes and one 21-inch size, where the Nomad Grappler lists three 19-inch sizes and the Road+Trail AT lists none.
